This charming property just outside of Florence was used by the owner to shelter people during WW2. If that’s not the most noble of uses for a castle, I don’t know what is. You can ask the residents to fill you in on the details over a glass of wine, if you’re interested. As for the price, let’s just say you could stay at an airport hotel if you spent a little more. A true Tuscan gem, this actual, life size watchtower is the perfect spot for lovers of all things Italian. Once you’re tired of the breathtaking view over the fields lined by Tuscan pine trees, you can take cooking classes to learn traditional recipes or play a sonata on the 1899 Steinway piano, accompanied by some more of that fabulous wine. That doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

Now if you only rented a Vespa and rode along Positano’s zigzag roads with your sweetheart to arrive home to your tower, it would almost be too much. If instead you prefer to go with a group, you can choose five lucky friends or relatives to join you, but maybe sneak up to the terrace alone once or twice. If you’re balking at the price, then remember that with 3 bedrooms sleeping a total of 6 guests, this works out to $203 per person. For a view like that, it’s a steal.

With a price like that, you can visit one of the thermal centers nearby to book a treatment (or two) and experience the famous mud therapy with the money you’d have used to pay for unreasonable on-site-parking at another hotel. Or just go take a dip in one of the hot thermal water pools – either way, let yourself soak in the beauty around you and forget your troubles while you’re here. It’s best you leave your cellphone at home.
